Trout Unlimited is seeking an Animal Packer to join their team in Bishop, CA. The role involves packing supplies and equipment to backcountry locations by horse or mule, and providing care for the stock.
About the Role
As an Animal Packer, you will work with the Pack Stock Center to support personnel and projects in national forest wilderness areas. Your responsibilities will include packing equipment for project crews, building balanced loads, fitting saddles, providing first aid to animals, and managing ranch and pasture facilities. You may also assist in training others on safe practices around pack stock and may spend extended periods camping in the wilderness.
About You
Required:
- Skill and experience safely packing a variety of equipment and supplies on pack animals.
- Ability to evaluate medical conditions of stock and assist with required medical attention.
- Skill in riding animals and leading pack animals safely.
- Class A driver's license with the ability to drive in mountainous terrain.
- Knowledge of ranch and pasture management, including forage management.
Preferred:
- Experience in building balanced loads using various packing techniques.
- Skill in correct shoeing methods for horses and mules.
- Ability to clean and repair saddles and pack equipment.
