Merck is seeking an Associate Director, Engineering to join their team in Rahway, NJ. The role involves overseeing complex workstreams and implementing capital project scope and technical studies focused on Process Design and Process Safety for Small Molecule High Potency/Containment Projects.

About the Role

As an Associate Director, Engineering, you will be responsible for developing project scope, providing innovative designs and solutions, and ensuring technical guidance during projects. You will assess technology viability, verify adherence to company standards, and oversee preliminary designs including P&ID development and PHA activities. The role requires participation in project implementation, directing engineering firms and suppliers, and contributing to the development of engineering guidelines and safety policies. Up to 25% domestic/international travel is required.

About You

Required:

Master's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Applied Life Sciences with 8 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, or a Bachelor's degree with 10 years of experience.
At least 5 years of experience in Process Design and Equipment Startup of pharmaceutical unit operations.
Experience in Capital Project Management, including adherence to schedule and budget, leadership of teams, and vendor management.
Experience in API Small Molecule Manufacturing and Potent Compound Handling.
Knowledge of Process Safety Management and Emergency Management.

Preferred:

At least 2 years of experience in Product Development and Commercialization with a focus on Pilot Plants.
Detailed understanding of Level of Protection Analysis (LOPA).
Knowledge of regulations and industry guidance (NFPA, ATEX, CE, OSHA).
Experience in Process and Product Safety Testing.
Familiarity with Lean and Six Sigma tools.
Experience mentoring and developing junior engineers.
