Summary
WindBorne Systems is seeking a Head of Manufacturing to join their team in Redwood City, CA. The role involves owning and scaling production systems for the world's largest constellation of autonomous high-altitude weather balloons.
About the Role
As the Head of Manufacturing, you will be responsible for the end-to-end manufacturing function, including production planning, process development, quality assurance, and team management. You will scale balloon production from hundreds to thousands per month while ensuring cost efficiency and quality. The role requires close collaboration with R&D and engineering to drive design-for-manufacturability and to create a culture of continuous improvement within the manufacturing team.
About You
Required:
- Strong instinct for the right level of process formalization at each stage of growth.
- Comfort with ambiguity and rapid design iteration; experience manufacturing products that were still being actively engineered.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work across engineering, operations, and leadership.
- Hands-on manufacturing engineering skills to diagnose process problems and design solutions.
Preferred:
- Experience with lightweight structures, composites, or flexible materials manufacturing.
- Familiarity with electromechanical assembly, sensors, and actuator systems.
- Experience with rapid prototyping tools (3D printing, laser cutting) and integrating them into production workflows.
- Proficiency with code (Python) for manufacturing data analysis, process automation, or tooling control.
- Experience transitioning R&D prototypes to scaled production.
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
