Camunda is seeking a Senior Software Engineer, Backend - Distributed Systems to join their team in Boston, MA. The role involves building and evolving a durable, highly available, horizontally scalable streaming platform for Camunda 8's orchestration capabilities.
About the Role
As a Senior Software Engineer, Backend on Camunda's Distributed Systems team, you will design, build, and maintain backend services for the distributed streaming platform. You will lead engineering initiatives, improve disaster recovery and resilience, design developer tooling, and collaborate with DevOps to enhance engineering effectiveness. Additionally, you will participate in support rotations to resolve complex production issues.
About You
Required:
- 7+ years of professional experience as a software engineer, focusing on backend and/or distributed systems.
- Proven experience leading medium-to-large engineering initiatives, breaking down ambiguous problems, and driving predictable delivery.
- Hands-on experience building and maintaining highly concurrent, data-intensive software with a deep understanding of low-level network and disk I/O.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills in a remote-first environment.
Preferred:
- Experience building workflow automation or process orchestration software.
- Familiarity with distributed systems algorithms or protocols such as Raft, Paxos, SWIM, and/or CRDTs.
- Knowledge of observability pillars (logging, metrics, tracing) and experience with L3 support.
- Deep knowledge of the Java Virtual Machine, especially its memory model and performance characteristics.
