Summary
Chalk is seeking a Software Engineer / Engineering Manager to join their team in San Francisco, CA. The role involves leading a team of engineers to build a data platform for real-time machine learning inference.
About the Role
As the founding Engineering Manager, you will lead a team of exceptional engineers, partner with the founding team to define the technical roadmap, and establish engineering processes that enable high velocity without sacrificing quality. You will also work directly with customers to ensure the platform addresses real-world ML challenges and help shape the engineering culture as the company grows.
About You
Required:
- 5+ years of engineering experience with 2+ years of technical leadership.
- Previous experience at an early-stage startup.
- Experience building production ML systems or data infrastructure.
- Strong programming skills and systems thinking.
- Ability to lead technical teams while still enjoying hands-on work.
- Strong communicator who can bridge technical and business contexts.
- Proven track record of delivering complex projects on time.
Preferred:
- Experience with Rust or distributed systems.
- Experience with query planners or compilers.
- Experience implementing data infrastructure or PaaS-like software.
- Experience scaling engineering teams in high-growth environments.
